Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate children s oral health behavior in relation to oral health beliefs of mothers and children.

Method: A descriptive study was conducted. Data were collected from four elementary schools in Busan and Ulsan. 166 mothers and children were enrolled in this study. Descriptive statistics, t-test or ANOVA with Scheffe s test and Pearson s Correlation Coefficients were used for data analysis with SPSS Win 14.0.

Results: The level of oral health beliefs of mothers and children was moderate and oral health behavior of children was also relatively moderate. The score of oral health behavior of children was affected by family type and mothers educational level and oral health beliefs of children showed weakly positive correlation with oral health beliefs of mothers, but there was no significant correlation between oral health behavior of children and oral health beliefs of mothers.

Conclusion: According to these results, it is necessary to understand about oral health behavior of children to improve oral health in children and it may need to develop oral health education and promotion program considered relating factors which influence oral health behavior in elementary school students.
